Mitochondrial Support
PQQ (Pyrroloquinoline Quinone)
Emerging EvidenceMitochondrial biogenesis effects are demonstrated preclinically and small human trials report changes in fatigue and sleep measures, but the human evidence base is genuinely small - which is what Emerging should mean.
Recommended Dose
10–20 mg daily
Timing
Morning with food
Mechanism of Action
Stimulates mitochondrial biogenesis via PGC-1α activation. Acts as a potent redox cofactor cycling 20,000+ times before degrading (vs ~4 for Vitamin C). Protects neurons from oxidative stress.
Side Effects & Safety
Well-tolerated. Very rare reports of headache, drowsiness, or mild GI discomfort. Limited long-term human data.
Do not use / talk to a doctor first
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding - not studied, rather than shown to be harmful
Interactions
No established drug interactions
None demonstrated in humans. As with the rest of this page, that reflects how little has been tested rather than a clean bill of health

Pregnancy & breastfeeding
Not studied in pregnancy or breastfeeding. Not recommended without medical advice.
Who should avoid / see a doctor
No specific group beyond pregnancy and breastfeeding, on current evidence. Worth knowing where the safety confidence comes from: the European Food Safety Authority assessed PQQ disodium salt as a novel food and the dossier supporting it proposed a consumption level of 20 mg/day - the top of the range on this page. Safety at higher intakes has not been established, so there is no case for exceeding it.
