Mechanism of Action
Highly bioavailable choline donor that crosses the blood-brain barrier. Converted to acetylcholine, supporting memory encoding, attention, and muscle contraction via cholinergic transmission.
Side Effects & Safety
Headache, dizziness, or GI distress at high doses. May lower blood pressure. Some concern about TMAO conversion with chronic high-dose use.
Do not use / talk to a doctor first
- Prior stroke or TIA, or established cerebrovascular disease
- Existing atherosclerosis or high cardiovascular risk, given the TMAO pathway
- Low blood pressure, or on antihypertensive medication
Interactions
Anticholinergic drugs
Alpha-GPC raises acetylcholine and may blunt their intended effect

Additive cholinergic load; sweating, salivation, nausea and slowed heart rate become more likely

Alpha-GPC can lower blood pressure, so the effects may add up

Scopolamine
Alpha-GPC is used experimentally to reverse scopolamine-induced amnesia, i.e. it directly opposes it

Pregnancy & breastfeeding
No controlled data in pregnancy or breastfeeding. Treat as unknown and avoid.
Who should avoid / see a doctor
Anyone with a history of stroke, TIA or significant cardiovascular disease should not take this without a doctor's involvement - the largest study available reports a materially higher 10-year stroke risk among users, and that finding has not been overturned. Also anyone on cholinergic, anticholinergic or blood-pressure medication.
