Why These Combine

Four compounds on three different clocks, which is the whole point of the design. The slow one is bacopa. In healthy adults, 300 mg a day of a standardised extract improved speed of visual information processing, learning rate and memory consolidation against placebo, with the maximum effect at 12 weeks, the later of its two test points (Stough 2001), and a meta-analysis of nine placebo-controlled trials of at least 12 weeks (518 participants) confirms a modest gain — about 18 ms on Trail B and 11 ms on choice reaction time (Kongkeaw 2014). So bacopa started the week before an exam does nothing; started at the beginning of term, it has a fair chance. The fast one is L-theanine with caffeine: 250 mg theanine plus 150 mg caffeine improved reaction times, working-memory speed and sentence verification and cut 'tired' ratings within the hour (Haskell 2008), and 100 mg plus 50 mg improved attention-switching and reduced distraction at 60 minutes in 27 volunteers (Owen 2008). That pairing is for the study session itself, and it assumes the caffeine is already there. Creatine sits in between and comes with a dose caveat: the sleep-deprivation result everyone quotes — less decline in choice reaction time, movement generation, balance and mood after 24 hours awake — was in 19 people who had loaded 5 g four times a day for seven days (McMorris 2006), not on a 5 g maintenance dose; the 5 g-a-day result that does exist is six weeks of 5 g improving backward digit span and Raven's matrices in 45 young vegetarians (Rae 2003), while a systematic review of six creatine trials found task performance largely unchanged in young people and a better memory response in vegetarians than in meat-eaters (Avgerinos 2018). Omega-3 helped where intake was low: 176 healthy adults aged 18–45 with low habitual DHA who took 1.16 g DHA a day for six months improved reaction times of episodic and working memory, women more on memory and men more on working-memory speed (Stonehouse 2013) — if your diet already supplies DHA, that trial does not tell you what to expect. Compared with Memory & Recall this drops alpha-GPC and phosphatidylserine for the two things you can feel in a session; compared with Focus & Flow it trades citicoline and rhodiola for bacopa and creatine, and so suits a term rather than a day. Verdict: start bacopa eight to twelve weeks out, use theanine with your normal coffee on study days, take creatine daily and judge it over a month, and add omega-3 only if your diet is short of it.

Full Ingredient Protocol

#1

Bacopa Monnieri

300 mg (50% bacosides)

300 mg/day for 12 weeks improved learning rate and memory consolidation in healthy adults (Stough 2001); a meta-analysis of 9 RCTs confirms a small attention-speed gain (Kongkeaw 2014). Effects were measured at 5 and 12 weeks and peaked at 12 — start at the beginning of term, not before the exam

Morning with food
#2

L-Theanine

200 mg

With caffeine, improved attention-switching and cut 'tired' ratings within the hour in two placebo-controlled crossovers (Haskell 2008; Owen 2008)

With study caffeine

Blunted the cognitive and mood cost of 24 h without sleep in 19 people — at a 20 g/day loading dose for 7 days, not 5 g (McMorris 2006); 5 g/day for 6 weeks improved working memory in 45 vegetarians (Rae 2003)

Morning with water
#4

Omega-3

2 g (EPA/DHA)

1.16 g DHA/day for 6 months improved memory reaction times in 176 young adults whose habitual DHA intake was low (Stonehouse 2013)

Disclaimer

Bacopa may cause mild GI discomfort initially — always take with food. Results compound over 8-12 weeks of consistent use. Informational only — not medical advice. Bacopa may interact with thyroid medication, sedatives and cholinergic drugs and is not for pregnancy — see the bacopa page before starting. Keep caffeine inside the trial range (50–150 mg per dose) and before early afternoon; this is a study stack, not a substitute for sleep. Creatine raises serum creatinine on routine blood tests and is not for diagnosed kidney disease. Not for under-18s without medical advice.
