Why These Combine
A daytime stack for people whose problem is a measurable stress load — deadlines, shift work, a bad quarter — rather than low mood or poor sleep. Ashwagandha carries it. In 64 adults with chronic stress, 300 mg of a full-spectrum root extract twice daily for 60 days lowered every stress scale and serum cortisol against placebo (Chandrasekhar 2012); in 60 stressed but healthy adults, 240 mg of a different standardised extract once daily for 60 days reduced Hamilton anxiety ratings and morning cortisol, with no adverse events (Lopresti 2019). The 600 mg here matches the first trial's daily total. Rhodiola is plausible but less well proven for stress specifically: the trial usually quoted — 101 adults with life-stress symptoms improving on 200 mg twice daily over four weeks (Edwards 2012) — had no placebo group, so the size of its effect is unknown; the placebo-controlled rhodiola evidence is about fatigue and attention in burnt-out adults at 576 mg a day (Olsson 2009). L-theanine's anti-stress data are acute and small: twelve people who took it before a mental-arithmetic task showed smaller heart-rate and salivary IgA responses than on placebo (Kimura 2007), which is why it sits in the midday slot rather than being a daily base. Phosphatidylserine is the under-dosed component. The two trials that showed a blunted cortisol response used 400 mg of a phosphatidic-acid-plus-PS complex for three weeks before a laboratory stress test (Hellhammer 2004) — and the effect disappeared at 600 and 800 mg — or 600 mg of PS for ten days before exercise in ten men (Starks 2008). At 100 mg this slot is a membrane-support dose borrowed from the memory literature, not a cortisol dose. Compared with Mood & Balance this moves ashwagandha to the morning and replaces saffron and omega-3 with rhodiola and PS; if your stress shows up mainly as broken sleep, the Deep Sleep stack is the better starting point, and if it shows up as exhaustion rather than tension, Clean Energy is. Verdict: take the ashwagandha seriously, treat rhodiola as a four-week experiment, expect theanine to help on the day rather than over the month, and do not buy phosphatidylserine for cortisol at this dose.
Full Ingredient Protocol
300 mg twice daily for 60 days lowered stress scores and serum cortisol in 64 stressed adults (Chandrasekhar 2012); 240 mg/day lowered anxiety ratings and morning cortisol in 60 (Lopresti 2019)
200 mg twice daily for 4 weeks improved life-stress symptoms in 101 adults — an open-label trial with no placebo arm (Edwards 2012); the placebo-controlled evidence is for fatigue (Olsson 2009)
Reduced heart-rate and salivary IgA responses to an acute mental stressor in a 12-person double-blind crossover (Kimura 2007)
Blunted ACTH/cortisol responses to a lab stressor at 400 mg of a PA+PS complex (Hellhammer 2004) and after exercise at 600 mg (Starks 2008) — both well above the 100 mg here
Disclaimer
Adaptogens may take 2-4 weeks to show full effects. Not a replacement for stress management practices. Consult your doctor if pregnant or nursing. Informational only — not medical advice. Ashwagandha may interact with thyroid medication and sedatives, and rhodiola inhibits MAO in laboratory studies, so it carries a theoretical interaction with SSRIs, SNRIs and MAO inhibitors and is not for bipolar disorder without supervision — ask a pharmacist before combining either herb with any prescription. Phosphatidylserine is usually soy-derived, so check the source if you have a soy allergy. Persistent anxiety or burnout needs a clinician; this stack is not a treatment for an anxiety disorder.

- 1.Chandrasekhar 2012, Indian J Psychol Med — 64 adults with a history of chronic stress, randomised double-blind: 300 mg high-concentration full-spectrum ashwagandha root extract twice daily for 60 days reduced scores on all stress-assessment scales (p<0.0001) and serum cortisol (p=0.0006) versus placebo; adverse effects mild and comparable between groups.
- 2.Lopresti 2019, Medicine (Baltimore) — 60 stressed healthy adults, randomised double-blind, 60 days: 240 mg standardised ashwagandha extract (Shoden) once daily reduced Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale scores (p=.040), morning cortisol (p<.001) and DHEA-S (p=.004) versus placebo; no adverse events.
- 3.Edwards 2012, Phytother Res — 101 adults with life-stress symptoms, multicentre open-label single-arm trial: Rhodiola rosea extract WS 1375 200 mg twice daily for 4 weeks improved all seven stress questionnaires, with changes seen from day 3; adverse events mostly mild. (no placebo arm — effect size cannot be separated from expectation)
- 4.Olsson 2009, Planta Med — 60 adults aged 20–55 with stress-related fatigue syndrome, randomised double-blind: SHR-5 Rhodiola extract 576 mg/day for 28 days improved Pines' burnout scale and CCPT II attention indices versus placebo and changed the cortisol awakening response.
- 5.Kimura 2007, Biol Psychol — 12 participants, double-blind counterbalanced crossover: L-theanine taken before a mental-arithmetic stressor reduced heart-rate and salivary immunoglobulin-A responses relative to placebo; heart-rate-variability analysis attributed this to reduced sympathetic activation. (very small acute study)
- 6.Hellhammer 2004, Stress — Four groups of 20 adults took 400, 600 or 800 mg/day of a soy phosphatidic acid + phosphatidylserine complex (PAS) or placebo for 3 weeks before the Trier Social Stress Test: 400 mg PAS blunted serum ACTH, serum cortisol and salivary cortisol responses and reduced post-test distress; the effect was NOT seen at the higher doses. (a PA+PS complex, not pure PS, and four times the dose used here)
- 7.Starks 2008, J Int Soc Sports Nutr — 10 healthy men, double-blind placebo-controlled crossover: 600 mg phosphatidylserine/day for 10 days lowered peak cortisol (39%) and cortisol area-under-curve (35%) after moderate-intensity cycling versus placebo; no effect on lactate or growth hormone. (n=10, exercise stress, six times the dose used here)
